WHO: Travis + Elise
WHAT: Heart Rock Trail
WHERE: Lake Arrowhead, California
WHEN: October, 2014
WHY: We haven’t been on a hike for awhile, and we need to catch up on our mile challenge.
All weekend we were both up to our ears in homework and knocking out stuff for the business. Come Monday we were a little burnt out, and seeing as how we haven’t been on a hike in awhile, we decided to head up the mountain to go for a shorter hike (side note, we didn’t play hookey; neither of us have class on Monday). I originally had researched hikes in Big Bear and found one that we were set on. More than half way to Big bear we get to a road closure. No not because of snow, Southern California is actually in the middle of a horrid heat wave, but because of construction. So we could’ve come down and gone all the way around as an alternative route to Big Bear, but we decided that wasn’t the best use of our time. Travis made the executive decision to head over to Lake Arrowhead and hike.
We have been told about this “heart rock” hike for awhile, and I guess you would say this was a sign that it was supposed to happen. So we headed West for Lake Arrowhead and in about 20 minutes found the trail head. The hike itself was fairly short and extremely easy. We walked around and climbed over rocks once we actually found the heart rock; so we ended up logging 3 miles. Although if you just hike to the rock, and turn around and hike back it would only be about a 2 mile hike. The heart rock is not actually a rock, but a formation within a larger rock. The heart looks as though it was formed by the way the water erroded away at the rock. It’s pretty awesome and is in a perfect heart shape. It is a pretty neat hike and was a fun early afternoon adventure.
