WHO: Travis + Elise
WHAT: Rubicon Trail
WHERE: Lake Tahoe, California
WHEN: June, 2014
WHY: We were camping up at Lake Tahoe, and wanted to check out one of the many hikes up there. We also wanted to knock out some miles for our mile challenge.
We really do resarch into hikes before we pursue them. There is a lot of information out there about hikes, and a lot of reviews which really help. Example: When first glance into this hike, they said it was going to be over 13 miles round trip. We got a late start and didn’t want to be out when it started getting dark. Further research into this hike and we found out there were multiple starting points, with great views along the route no matter how far you went. Versus hiking half way to get to the ‘grandview point.’ So it just depended on when you wanted to turn around and head back. We started at the second trail head and hiked to boat camp, where we ate lunch before heading back. Total, we logged 7 miles-3.5 miles in and 3.5 miles out the same route.
This hike doesn’t have too many steep inclines, and has the most gorgeous views of the lake around every corner. As evidence by our past hikes, we are really all about the rewarding views when choosing a hike. The hike literally trails the edge of the lake. At certain points all that is between you and the edge of the water is rocks along the side of the hill you’re standing on. There are a couple points where the hike is very narrow, and there is no railing along the edge of the trail. As with any hike, take caution and be aware of your surroundings. Overall, it really is a gorgeous hike.
