WHO: Travis + Elise
WHAT: Sandstone Peak
WHERE: Malibu, California
WHEN: February, 2015
WHY: It was Valentine’s day and it’s been a running tradition to go on a hike on Valentine’s day. Read about last year’s Valentine’s day hike hereI’m not going to lie and say this hike was easy. It was one of the more difficult hikes we have been on for a couple reasons: incline and the trail it self. The only way to get to the highest peak in the Santa Monica mountains is to go UP. The first half of the hike was all steep up hill climbs with a few jaunts that went down and very little that leveled out. The trail itself was very rocky and when you get to the top there is no flat area to walk around on, you are walking on the side of a mountain, literally. When you make it to the top, the breathtaking views all around you make the constant uphill climb worth it. During the hike, there was gorgeous scenery all around, you almost forget you are right outside of downtown LA. The drive in is absolutely gorgeous as well. It’s really refreshing just taking a moment to sit at the top and take in the beautiful scenery. If you make it to the top, there is a small plaque and under it is a mail box slot with a journal in it that you can sign acknowledging you succeeded in making it to the top of the mountain. We logged just under 5 miles up and back. When we researched this hike, we were told it was about 7 miles round trip, but when we got there we noticed there are a few different routes you can take to get to the top. We parked on the side of Yerba Buena Road, but there are dirt lots you can park in at the beginning of the trail head. They were just full by the time we got there, but the trail didn’t seem too crowded at all. I know I say this about all the hikes we go on, but these views were amazing and this hike was one of our favorites.
