Those of you that follow me on social media know that Travis and I have launched a new business venture. If you’re hearing about it for the first time, head on over to our website to check it out, or just keep reading.
This is the third installment of a series of blog posts that we have published over the last month to introduce you to EAT, and show you some behind the scenes of how we got to opening day. You can read the first post here, and the second post here. This next one is all about marketing and branding
I have to admit, although it was fun to design the cards, I think I had more fun designing the marketing and packaging materials. Proof: I had the marketing materials and branding finished before the card designs. I (Elise) ended up creating everything. I would like to think I have this great expansive view on design, but I think I am a one trick pony and when it comes down to design-simple and basic is all I got. But it works.
I tried to keep all of our marketing materials cohesive with a similar color scheme and same type fonts. A black and white color scheme was essential, but then we decided some color was needed and added in yellow. For our logo, and some other titles I used my wacom tablet to sketch out lettering and then used a simple sans serif font for the other lettering. My favorite branding tricks: stickers and stamps. I guess I should’ve prefaced that last statement with some background: when I was younger I collected stickers, and for the majority of my life I have had an obsession with paper crafting (hence the stamps). I guess it’s no surprise that these were the branding tricks I have gravitated towards for our branding tricks. Also, they are easy and inexpensive ways to customize packaging materials.
For our stamps, we first created the designs in photoshop and then went through simonstamp to have them produced. Heads up if you are going to create your own stamps, check out their FAQ to make sure you are creating within their specificed file size. We created a stamp for the front of the bags that the thank you note sets are packaged in. We also created two generic stamps: one of our logo and the other of our hashtag (#eatlovenutrition). We now use these to stamp the boxes to give them a customized look without actually ordering printed boxes. Another way we are integrating stamps is through a roller stamp for our discount codes. We sent out flyers in our promotional boxes and then certain orders receive a coupon for a percentage off of their future orders. When creating these coupons we left a space on the bottom to stamp in each code. Stickers. Another easy way to customize packaging. After we created the stickers in photoshop, we choose Sticker Giant to order them through. I can not say enough about this company. They were a wonderful company to work with and we love our finished product. We designed stickers for the packaging of our food pun pencils, our limited edition prints, and then had some generic stickers made for whatever. Our mission statement is: EAT is all about spreading the word of good nutrition in a well designed and unconventional way. So what would our well designed products be if we didn’t have well designed marketing materials? We wanted marketing materials that weren’t going to break the bank, but were still well designed and added a little something extra to our orders. I believe that marketing and branding, if done right, can take your product a long way. For us, it was all about finding a balance between cost and design, and I think we achieved that.
There you have it, all our secrets are out now 😉 Thanks for following along as we have introduced you to EAT over the last couple of weeks.
With much love,
Elise And Travis
