This post is a breakdown of what we spent money on for our trip to Wyoming (Jackson and Yellowstone) for our 1 year anniversary. I find it almost inspiring reading about how others spend money on their travels (and sometimes travel for free!). It makes traveling seem more attainable and not such a far off goal.
I wouldn’t say we are travel hackers, or thrifty travelers, but we do try to be smart about our money and traveling. We stay loyal to Southwest, Hyatt and Hotels.com (to be able to rack up the points quicker), and we have a couple travel friendly credit cards (that reward you more points when you book or redeem for travel). I’ll have to write a post on all this one day. But in the mean time here’s our budget breakdown of our Wyoming trip!
For reference, we budgeted about $3300 for this trip and came in slightly under budget – see how below!

For reference, here are our travel stats:
Left: Wednesday September 16th
Returned: Monday September 21st
6 days + 5 nights in total
TRANSPORTATION
Wyoming isn’t public transportation friendly, so we rented a car to get around. We flew into SLC, where we rented our car, and then drove into Wyoming. BUT! even if you fly into Jackson directly, you’re going to want a car to get around because there is so much exploring to do.
RENTAL CAR + FEES: $427.72
GAS: $114.82 (I was honestly surprised at this considering we drove ALOT)
TRANSPORTATION TOTAL: $542.54
FLIGHTS
We flew from Ontario into Salt Lake City and then drove into Wyoming (you can read more about why we did this vs flew directly into Jackson in this post).
TWO ROUNDTRIP FLIGHTS: $516.92
FOOD
This includes all of our food for the entire trip. From food at the airport, to a grocery store run for snacks and drinks, to all our restaurant and dessert stops. We don’t purposefully seek out cheaper or more expensive places to eat, we just eat where we want too (as we do whenever we travel).
FOOD TOTAL: $506.67

HOTEL
Read more about our lodging in this post. We stayed in Teton Village, about 15 minutes outside of the town of Jackson, at Teton Mountain Lodge and Spa. We ended up redeeming 2 of our 5 nights in hotels.com points for our stay.
HOTEL TOTAL (5 nights total, including taxes + fees): $1650.22 and after hotels.com rewards redemption $1321

OTHER EXPENSES
This includes passes to get into the national parks, any souvenirs we purchased along the way, our canoe adventure in GTNP, and any other misc expenses. Read more about what we did in Wyoming in this post.
TOTAL: $213.47
GRAND TOTAL FOR OUR TRIP: $3249.34
-After we allocated $330 worth of hotels.com points, the total came down to $3100.17
PER PERSON PER DAY FOR 6 DAYS (after miles were applied): $258
So there you have it, a breakdown of our budget for our trip to Wyoming! We ended up using $330 worth of hotels.com points towards our hotel stay, and we do have a couple travel centered credit cards, and Southwest airline accounts to accumulate points and miles for future travel. If we’re not redeeming points, we’re accumulating them for future travel!
