This is the fourth post in a series of 5 posts I’m writing to document our trip back East last Winter. Being the foodies we are, this post is all about the food we ate while we were in New York. My final post in this series will be a budget breakdown of how much the entire trip ended up costing us.
You can read about our time in Boston HERE, what we ate in Boston HERE, and all about our time in New York HERE.
Half way through our trip I found the app PINBOX, which was very helpful in New York, and I wished I would’ve found it sooner. This app isn’t free, but it is a pretty awesome app for traveling. You can create a map for each trip of where you’re going and then you can pin anything to it (dining, attractions, your hotel, etc.). From there you can add notes and pictures to each pin and when you’re ready to visit that pin, you can just click on the address and it opens up the Maps app on your phone. I created a new map of New York and pinned all the places I had on my must eat list, all the main attractions we wanted to hit up, and where we were staying. I then further categorized the food pins into breakfast/cafes, desserts, and lunch/dinner. Made my life so much easier!
We didn’t even get close to checking off everything on our “must eat list” while we were in New York, but what we did get around to eating was delicious!!
Street food
We didn’t get into New York until later in the evening, but we wasted no time and headed down to see 5th avenue and the Rockefeller tree all lit up. There weren’t too many options for dinner open in the area, and Travis wanted to try a street hotdog, so a street hotdog it was. Being super tourists for the night we topped off our evening of sight seeing with a pretzel and called it a night.
Buvette
If there was one single place I wanted to go eat on our East cost trip it was Buvette. I’ve followed their dreamy instagram for a couple years now (check it out here!), and I must say this place is as delicious and dreamy as it looks. I got the steamed scrambled eggs with goat cheese and sun dried tomatoes and I’m still dreaming about it.

BAGELS. Every morning.
About two city blocks from our hotel was a hole in the wall bagel shop, filled with every type of shmear (aka cream cheese for those of us who aren’t bagel connoisseurs) you can think of. This was definitely a locals spot, and probably didn’t even have the best bagels in the city; but man, half an everything bagel with plain shmear hit the spot every morning. So good that the last morning we were there we bought two extra bagels to take back home with us.

Raclette
That one restaurant that covers your food with hot melty cheese. Yeah, we went there. If you can get passed the hot cheese smell that resembles stinky feet, it’s worth it because who doesn’t want their plate covered in a blanket of warm, melty cheese?!

MOMOFUKU Milk Bar
Being a self proclaimed foodie I knew we couldn’t visit NYC without hitting up Milk Bar, getting a crack pie to go and trying their cereal milk soft serve ice cream. (Side note: Travis is OBSESSED with cereal, like so much so he could have it every meal and be perfectly ok with it). Borderline freezing temperatures for us Californians didn’t stop us from trying the famous ice cream. Spoiler alert: it lives up to the hype.

Blank Slate (breakfast/pastries)
We popped in here for a quick bite to eat (see: NEEDED COFFEE!) before we began our busy day. We both got breakfast, and our morning drinks (coffee for her, and hot chocolate for him). It hit the spot, and filled the morning void, but it wasn’t memorable.

Adrienne’s Pizzabar
HOLY PIZZA BATMAN! New York style pizza was obviously on our must eat while in NY list; I even had recommendations from friends who live in the area. But,we were starving after our excursion of seeing the Statue of Liberty and decided to pop into the nearest restaurant we came across when we made it back to Manhattan. If only every restaurant we casually came across was this freakin delicious! Sadly, no we never got to a joint with real NY style pizza.

Max Brenner (hot chocolate/dessert)
We had an early dinner/late lunch at Adrienne’s Pizzabar, and weren’t starving for dinner come dinner time. And, it wasn’t quite late enough to head to Broadway for our show, so dessert was the only option, duh. Travis, being on a quest to find the world’s best hot chocolate, had to try Max Breener. Their desserts had too much sugar for my tastebuds, but their rich and creamy hot chocolate is worth a trip alone. PRO TIP: Make reservations if you want to go. We waited a good 30-45 minutes for a table for 2 and it wasn’t even peak dining time.

Urbanspace Vanderbilt (donut) Toby’s Estate Coffee
Our last morning in New York, we were on a time crunch to find something to eat before we had to head back to our hotel to grab our stuff and head to the airport for home. We stopped at a small cafe for a quick breakfast sandwich to split, then found our way to Urbanspace for the a dulce de leche donut from Dough, and our usual morning drinks from Toby’s Coffee Estate.

I still have a list a mile long of places I want to eat at in New York, and we just barely scratched the surface. Which just means another trip or two is in order!
